Black leather over wood, the hinged lid fitted with a recessed handle between the embossed cypher of EVIIR and the initial ‘C for Frederick, Lord Cawdor; the leading edge further embossed with the words ‘FIRST LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY’. The black leather lined interior gilt stamped with the name of H.M. Stationer, ‘Wickwar & Co., 8 Poland Street, Manufacturers to H.M. Staty. Office’, the lock further stamped ‘Wickwar’

Frederick Archibald Vaughan Campbell, 3rd Earl Cawdor, P.C., D.L., J.P., (1847-1911) served as First Lord of the Admiralty between March and December 1905. Famously, his successors included Winston Churchill who became First Lord in October 1911.
