Oil on board. Small half length portrait of a scarred officer in the Hanoverian service. Inscribed in ink verso ’Kapt Lyttyon / (general)’.

Unusually he sports a red cockade on the tricorne hat tucked under his left arm, in place of the black cockade traditionally associated with the British Army during the eighteenth century. During the American Revolution, Washington instructed his officers to adopt the red cockade as an identifying mark. Similarly Scottish loyalist troops adopted the red cockade during the Jacobite Rising of 1745 to distinguish themselves from the white cockades of the rebels. Framed and glazed.
