Ex: The Norfolk Nelson Museum

Watercolour on paper. English school. A group of sailors re-enact a naval battle for the benefit of admirers on the Denes at Great Yarmouth, in the shadow of architect William Wilkins’ Norfolk Naval Pillar raised in 1817-19 to the memory of Norfolk’s greatest son Admiral Lord Nelson. Framed and glazed.

The first custodian of the monument was former Able Seaman James Sharman, a member of the crew of H.M.S. Victory. A Norfolk man himself, Sharman was one of those who carried Nelson below decks after he was mortally wounded on the fateful and victorious day of 21 October 1805.
