Ex: Colonel David George Carr Sutherland (1920–2006), commissioned into the Black watch in 1939, commanded S Detachment of the Special Boat Squadron (SBS) during the Second World War and later the 21 SAS Regiment. Operation Anglo (1942): Sutherland led a small party landed secretly in enemy territory to destroy aircraft, petrol, and stores. Despite being hunted, he and a Royal Marine eventually swam to a pickup craft. For his actions, he was awarded the Military Cross (MC). Special Boat Squadron (SBS): From 1943 to 1945, he served as the commanding officer of S Detachment SBS, operating in Palestine and the Greek islands. He was known for his "complete disregard for personal danger and immense drive and initiative" during numerous operations, for which he received a Bar to his MC and the Greek War Cross. Post-war Service: After the war, he commanded the 21 SAS (TA) Regiment from 1956 to 1958 and served as deputy commander SAS Group from 1967 to 1972.
