Overall: 20.5cm (8in) x 15.7cm (6in)

Three quarter length sepia tinted portrait of Prince George, Duke of York (later George V). Signed and dated in the lower mount ‘George / H.M.S. Crescent 1898’. Contained easel backed gilt tooled frame.

Prince George, Duke of York's seagoing service with the Royal Navy virtually ended in 1892. However, on 8 June 1898 the Prince embarked at Portsmouth on HMS Crescent, a 13-gun twin-screw cruiser, and under his command the ship visited Torquay, Stornoway, Kirkwall and Portland, returning to Cowes on 31 July for Cowes week. The Italian maritime painter Eduardo De Martino CVO was on board ship during the whole trip and was reportedly good company, dining frequently with the Duke and entertaining the Ward Room with songs after dinner.
