Embroidery on card with inked inscriptions, being the Office of Works master pattern for the embroidered badge on the dress coats of The Yeomen Warders. The present variant was the version introduced on the accession of George V, when the change of royal monogram of ER for Edwardus Rex (Edward VII) to GR became necessary. Framed and glazed.
The Yeomen Warders of His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London were formed in 1485 by Henry VII, the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Consequently they are uniformed in Tudor style uniforms and wear the Tudor rose as the heraldic badge of Henry VII’s dynasty. The Yeomen Warders of the Tower of London are popularly known as Beefeaters, a nickname they share with The Yeomen of the Guard. The Yeoman Warders guard the Tower of London and protect the British Crown Jewels. They have given tours of the Tower since Victorian times. They are made up from former warrant officers or senior non-commissioned officers of the Armed Forces with 22 years service. They also perform historic duties like the nightly Ceremony of the Keys.
