Silver. In the form of a cavalry officer’s sabretache of the 13th Hussars, the hinged front flap with repousse work decoration of the regimental pattern, comprising crowned Queen Victoria cypher, laurel leaves entwined with battle honours flanking a circlet inscribed with the motto ‘Viret in Aetanem’ (May it flourish forever). Plain interior for matches and striker fitted to the reverse, 242g. Maker’s mark of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd., 112 Regent Street, London. Hallmarked Sheffield 1909.
The traditional hussar uniform was tight and generally had no pockets, hence the advent of the sabretache, a leather wallet for papers and other small items, hanging from the sword belt.
