Silver. Of tapering cylindrical form, the body of each engraved with the crowned regimental number encircled by ‘West India Regt’ title. Hallmarked London 1830.
The 1830s saw the 2nd West India Regiment deployed to quell unrest in the Caribbean surrounding the abolition of slavery on 1 August 1834. In the Cayman Islands the Marquess of Sligo and Governor of Jamaica arrived with twenty troops from the 2nd West India Regiment. The presence of the soldiers, however, increased tensions, as the Caymanians were not used to having British troops stationed on the island, let alone black troops with the result therethere were several clashes between the soldiery and the civilians.
