Overall height: 9.5cm (3.7in)
Silver figure of a seated and barefooted Askari modelled in the pre-1914 field service uniform of a jersey, shorts, putteees, and fez with integral foldable cloth peak and neck flap. Raised on a stepped ebonised base applied with a silver plaque engraved with the bugle and cords badge of the 3rd (Kenya) Battalion King’s African Rifles. Maker’s mark of Hunt & Roskell Ltd. Hallmarked London 1903. Height of figure: 5cm (2in).
The cartridge pouch bandolier worn by this Askari is a testatment to the equipment shortages that plagued the regiment throughout its early years. Slade Wallace equipment was prescribed under the official regulation, but a note from 1898 described the equipment and uniforms as being 'anything procurable’. Evidently commissioned by an officer on a tight budget.
