Diamond set white gold VRI cypher for Victoria Regina Imperatrix (Victoria Queen Empress) encircled by the Garter in yellow gold and blue enamel surmounted by a diamond and enamel set QV Crown.
The crowned VRI cypher encircled by the Garter was used by 21st (Empress of India’s) Lancers on the first type lance cap as the central motif, after their conversion from Hussars to Lancers in 1897. The same style was used widely as a universal pattern device as a pouch badge in the British Indian Army from the 1870s until 1902. The present brooch also matches the design of the headdress badge of the 2nd (Queen Victoria's Own) Rajput Light Infantry, 1911-1922.
