Silver case, the body engraved with the Royal Bengal Tiger and Hampshire Rose badge of the 4th Hampshires. Sprung hinged lid and gilt interior. Maker’s mark of Sampson Mordan & Co Ltd. Hallmarked Chester 1916.
This Territorial battalion was formed on 1st April 1908 as a result of the Haldane Reforms. The battalion was formed of 8 companies of which A and B Companies were in Winchester, with others in Andover, Alton and Aldershot, Botley, Basingstoke and Yateley. The battalion was split on the outbreak of the First World War. 1/4th Hants served in Mesopotamia where Battalion HQ and one Company were captured at Kut-el-Amara on 29 April 1916. 2/4th served in India, Egypt and in 1918 in France & Flanders.
