Early Victorian presentation snuff box of rectangular form with foliate edges and engine-turned decoration, the hinged lid with raised floral chased border enclosing the engraved inscription, 'Presented by / the Sergts. of the 88th Regt. / (or Connaught Rangers) / To / Sergt. Major Geo. Anderson / on his / retiring from the Regt. / 20th May /1840’. Silver-gilt interior. Maker’s mark of Francis Clark, Birmingham. Hallmarked 1838. 

Sergeant Major George Anderson was a Chelsea Out-Pensioner living in the Brighton district in 1855.
