Photographic quarter length portrait of George V in naval uniform by court photographers W & D Downey, Ebury Street, London. Signed in the lower mount in ink 'George RI’. Contained in its  original glazed frame applied with presentation plaque inscribed: 'Presented By / His Majesty King George V / To / Messrs R. & W. Hawthorn, Leslie & Co Ltd / After His Visit To / St Peters Works And Hebburn Shipyard. / May 19 1915.'. Print size 57.5cm (22.6in) x 45cm (17.7in).

St. Peters Works and Hebburn Shipyard were the twin pillars of R. & W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, an industrial powerhouse on the River Tyne in north east England. The Hebburn Shipyard (est.1853 by Andrew Leslie) built hulls for naval and merchant ships, while the St. Peters Works, located upriver in Newcastle, was the marine engine and locomotive works that manufactured the massive engines that powered the hulls built at Hebburn.
