Three quarter length portrait photograph by Royal photographer Herbert Vandyk (1879–1943) of the Duke of York (later King George VI, reigned 1937-1952) wearing Royal Air Force Group Captain’s full dress uniform complete with the pre 1939 helmet, likened by some to a baboon’s behind. Signed in ink and dated in lower right ‘Albert / June 1922’ in the Duke’s hand. Photographer’s negative reference number verso. Glazed and contained in its original easel-backed, navy blue morocco frame, with arched top embossed with the Yorkshire rose, the Garter and coronet of a prince of the blood, by Clark, 53 Conduit Street, London. It was in this uniform that the Duke married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon the following year.
