Thomas Lyde Hornbrook (1807-1855) was the eldest son of Colonel Richards Lyde Hornbrook Royal Marines, (1783-1856), a veteran of the Napoleonic wars and a noted marine artist based in Plymouth. Thomas exhibited in the Royal Academy (1836 and 1844) and around 1833 became marine painter to the Duchess of Kent and her daughter, the future Queen Victoria. He served in the British Legion during the First Carlist War as a Captain in the Engineers. He returned to England, probably together with his father, in August 1840.
