Silver mounted hoof of an officer’s charger, the hinged lid to the interior inkwell compartment engraved ‘Shumla / Bulgarian Pony / Ridden by / Capt R Hamilton / Grenadier Guards / Crimea 1854-5’. Maker’s and retailer’s mark of Thornhill & Co, 144 Bond Street, London. Hallmarked London 1874.

Captain Robert Worthingthon Hamilton, Grenadier Guards was wounded at the Battle of the Alma while carrying the colours,  but continued in the action. He was present throughout the siege of Sebastopol. He is pictured among the Grenadier officers enjoying Christmas dinner 1855 on the Heights before Sebastopol by was artist William Simpson.
