Gun turnscrew, the hardwood handle applied with a paper label inscribed in ink ‘This screw taken from Kertch in the Crimea by Charley 1855’.

On 24 May 1855, a 15,000-strong allied British, French, and Turkish force captured Kertch (Kerch) in Crimea, cutting vital Russian supply lines to Sevastopol. The operation successfully opened the Sea of Azov to allied warships. However, the attack is also remembered for widespread looting of Kertch by troops that included the destruction of the city's ancient Hellenic museum.
