Silk flag fragment with accompanying envelope inscribed ‘Relics’ and manuscript label inscribed in ink, ‘Dear Miss Whish / This is a bit of the / Russian flag, that was waving proudly / in the Redan, before the English took it / but It did not wave long. after.’ Framed and glazed.
The Black Sea port of Sebastopol fell to Allied assault on 18 September 1855 following the capture of the Malakoff Tower by the French. The British assault was directed against the Great Redan, a large projecting fortification dominating the eastern defences.
