William Campbell (1819-1858) was the second son of Archibald Montgomery Campbell of Askomel, Argyllshire. He was educated at the East India Company's Military Seminary at Addiscombe, Surrey, and commissioned Ensign in the Bengal Army in December 1837. He sailed for India, arriving at Fort William, Calcutta, in August 1838, and was posted to the 39th Bengal Native Infantry later that year and was promoted Lieutenant on 22nd April 1840. Campbell served with his regiment during the Gwalior Campaign in December 1843, notably participating in the battle of Punniar on 29th December 1843. The present portrait was most likely executed on Campbell's return to England in 1854.
