Porcelain figure by Royal Doulton. Printed mark and painted title numbered HN1217. Period of manufacture 1926-1938.
Inspired by a painting of the Prince of Wales by Sir Alfred Munnings, the present figure was designed by sculptor Leslie Harradine for Royal Doulton and was produced over the period 1928 to 38. Such being a testament to the Prince’s popularity as a sportsman and celebrity figure. The Prince was a keen horseman and frequently raced at home and on his many overseas tours. His interest was begun by his father George V, who reputedly told him as a young man, “If you can’t ride well, I’m afraid people will call you a duffer.”
