Watercolour heightened with body colour. King George V in plumed bicorne seated alongside Queen Mary in an open landau at Temple Bar, performing the Sword Ceremony at the the boundary between the City of Westminster and the City of LondoAccording to ancient tradition, a reigning monarch must seek the Lord Mayor's permission to enter the City of London. At this boundary, the Lord Mayor traditionally surrenders the City's Sword to the King as a gesture of allegiance, which the King then touches before returning it.

Charles Thomas Howard (1865-1942) was a Lincolnshire born, London-based postcard illustrator. His worked covered a wide range of subjects. He specialised in ceremonial subjects and is perhaps best known for a series of postcards for London Zoo. He exhibited at the Royal Academy.
