Hallmarked 1936
9 carat yellow gold and black enamel with chain link connections. Each gold rectangular panel with chamfered corners with centered on the ‘GVIR’ cypher for King George VI (reigned 1936-1952) under an enamelled Imperial State Crown. Maker’s mark of Royal warrant holder Henry Hodson Plante. Hallmarked 1936. Contained in original case of Plante of Bury Street, St. James's, London.
The King Emperor George V died at Sandringham on 20 January 1936, at the age of 70. He was succeeded by Edward VIII who on 10 December of that year signed his abdication notices in the presence of his three younger brothers: Prince Albert, Duke of York (who succeeded Edward as George VI); Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester; and Prince George, Duke of Kent. The abdication was given effect by Act of Parliament next day confining the period of manufacture of the present cufflinks to a just a few weeks of that eventful year.
