Launched in 1912, Dublin assisted in the Gallipoli landings and survived a torpedoing in Albanian waters before joining the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron in the Grand Fleet. At the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916 Dublin fired 117 6-inch shells and, along with her sister ship Southampton, attacked and sank a destroyer. Both ships, however, sustained severe damage. Three crew members were killed and 27 wounded when Dublin received five 5.9 shell inch hits from the cruiser SMS Elbing and eight 4.1-inch shell hits from Stuttgart (possibly also Frauenlob and Hamburg). Subsequent repairs to Dublin were not completed until 17 June whence the present relic was no doubt salvaged.
