Dobson, V.D. / By the Staff Sergeants & Sergeants / of the / 1st Volunteer Battalion Prince of Wales’s / North Staffordshire Regiment / in appreciation of his services / and kindness as / Commanding Officer / for seven years / From Dec 4th 1900 to Dec 4th 1907 / Col Sgt G.K. Downing President /Col Sgt W.H.P. Loney Treasurer / Nov 11th 1907’. Maker’s mark of Walker & Hall. Figure height: 14cm (5.5in). Hallmarked Sheffield 1907.

Colonel Sir William Warrington Dobson, VD, TD, (1861-1941) of Seighford Hall, Staffordshire was a model Victorian gent. He was the chairman of the family brewery in Burslem; an alderman of the town; a county councillor; and High Sheriff of Staffordshire as well as a supporter of many institutions around The Potteries. He joined he 1st Volunteer Battalion, North Staffordshires in 1880 and rose to be its commanding officer in 1900 with his headquarters at C Company’s Newcastle Street drill hall. In 1908 he chaired the organising committee for the Staffordshire Territorial Association, and was appointed Honorary Colonel of the new 5th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment.
