Patinated bronze. Portrait bust of George V as George, Duke of York in civilian dress. Raised on a red Sienna marble columnar base. Signed and dated ‘Will Tyler SC / 1894’ to the reverse. Bust attributed to Compagnie des Bronzes foundry Brussels.
William Henry Tyler (1852-1906) was born in Worcester, the son of an oil and colourman. He studied at Royal Academy Schools and was awarded a silver medal for a model of a statue or group in 1875. He established a studio at 26 Hereford Square, London and specialised in portrait busts and classical groups. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1878-93; and at the Autumn exhibition of modern pictures (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool), 1878, ‘Hercules throwing Lichas into the Sea’.
