Gold and silver. Cigarette case with sprung, hinged planished cover applied with the coronet, rose of York and foul anchor device, in gold, of Prince George, Duke of York (later George V, reigned 1910-1936). Gilt interior case. Maker’s mark of Edward H Stockwell for Clark of 220 Old Bond Street, London. Hallmarked London 1890. Cased.
The Rose of York and foul anchor badge was created in 1893, at the time of George V’s marriage to Princess May of Teck, to reflect his recent creation as Duke of York and his naval career.
