Full length portrait photograph of the Duke of York (later King George VI reigned (1937-1952)) in country attire. Signed in ink and dated in the mount ‘Albert / 1923’ in the Duke’s hand. Glazed and contained in its original easel-backed, gilt tooled, black morocco frame by Ramage, 68 Jermyn Street, London. Image: 21.5cm x 16cm.

The present photograph is thought to have been taken at Polesden Lacey, Surrey, following the marriage of the Duke of York to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon at Westminster Abbey on 26 April 1923. The royal couple were the guests of the widowed socialite Mrs Ronald Greville who was was a close friend of Queen Mary. At her death in 1942 Mrs Greville bequeathed her important collection of jewels to Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother), including a diamond necklace reputedly belonging to Marie Antoinette.
