Polychromed ceramic. Modelled in 1941 by Ernest Bailey, head designer at Burgess & Leigh’s Middleport works in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. This design was one of the first Toby jugs to associate Churchill with the archetypal free-born Englishman John Bull and the British bulldog. However the idiom was clearly recognised by Charles Noke at Royal Doulton in his iconic series of Union Jack draped bulldogs, and also by Clarice Cliff in her revamped design of the Carruthers Gould toby jug produced by Wilkinson Ltd in late 1941. Following the introduction of restrictions on the manufacture of non-essentials, Bailey’s design continued to be produced but in plain white ‘utility ware’. The base of the jug bears the impressed legend: ‘John Bull Churchill 1940. We shall defend every village, every town and every city.’
