Coloured print  of Sir Winston Churchill. After Arthur Pan (fl.1920-1960). Published by Frost & Reed Ltd, Fine Art Publishers, Bristol and London 1943. Period frame.

After the well known 1942 oil painting by the Hungarian portrait painter Professor Arthur Pan which hangs in the Great Hall of the Merchant Venturers. 1000 of these prints were made in 1943 and sold by Frost & Reed, the proceeds going to Clementine Churchill's Aid to Russia fund.

Arthur Pan (1894-1983) also produced wartime portraits of Jan Smuts and Tito. He told a newspaper that the Churchill portrait took six months to complete, that "Mr. Churchill was certainly a very difficult sitter. He wouldn't sit still for long!", and that most of the work had to be done from memory (Good Morning Brighton, 22 February 1945).
