The Raising of the Union Flag by 'C' company of 40 Commando Royal Marines, San Carlos, 1982,
Limited edition of 500, modelled to Commemorate Victory in the Falklands,1982.
Michael Sutty, (1937-2003) originally trained as an engineer but a natural aptitude for clay sculpture led him to establishing Michael Sutty Porcelain Limited in 1963. Originally selling his bone china figures from a small shop in Westerham, Kent, he soon established his Manufactory in Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent. By the 1980's Sutty was selling from a gallery in the Thomas Goode store in Mayfair, and finally his own premises in Burlington Arcade.
Sutty’s sculptures celebrate British military heritage and achievements in all their forms, from dramatic vignette scenes from the Battle of Waterloo to the raising the Union Flag by ‘C’ Company 40 Commando, Royal Marines at San Carlos Bay, Falklands on 21 May 1982. He garnered many admirers and collectors, including Margaret Thatcher who appreciated the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail present in his work. The London Times has called him “The finest sculptor of military figures in the world”.
